Platinum and Palladium Prints

These prints reproduce images with incredible delicacy and everlasting permanence.  The image becomes part of the paper, which gives it a unique tactile quality with no glare from any viewing angle.  Because of the vast amount of variation and control possible with this process and the highly personal nature of these prints, we will work one on one with the photographer and supply test prints when necessary or requested before a print is submitted for approval.  Images are printed on the next size up (e.g. 4x5 on a 5x7, etc.)

Albumen Prints

Albumen prints are one of the oldest processes provided by Archival Custom Printing.  As with all historical processes, albumen is a contact process and must be exposed to sunlight or artificial ultraviolet with the negative in contact to render an image.  My albumen paper is double coated by hand with even layers of fermented egg whites on a single ply 100% rag paper.  Gold toning gives the prints their characteristic purplish-brown hue.  Platinum toning is available giving prints a brownish-black hue.

For final presentation, each finished print is dry mounted onto single ply 100% rag board to maintain print flatness.  Archival Custom printing can either process a photographer's large format film to accommodate albumen or and Enlarged Duplicate Negative can be made from any supplied negative or transparency.

Printing Out Paper (P.O.P.)

Printing Out Paper was available in the U.S. through Kodak until the 1970's, but now an importer here supplies a P.O.P. that is quite beautiful and silver-rich.  P.O.P. is very similar to albumen, rendering nearly the same color and tonality of it's predecessor, but uses gelatin  for the emulsion layer and it factory made.  Each print is gold toned, giving a color and tonality similar to an albumen print, but does not require the very high contrast negatives that albumen does.

Cyanotypes and Van Dyke Prints

Invented in the 1840's by Sir John Herschel, the cyanotype emulsion can be applied to a variety of papers and even fabrics, making it extremely versatile for the photographic artist.  Van Dyke give a brown toned image without blacks, as the cyanotype gives blue images without blacks.  The cyanotype and Van Dyke emulsion is applied by brush or coating tube to the same paper used for platinum printing, but the photographer can request or supply a paper that best suits his or her needs.  Call to discuss your ideas.

Enlarged Duplicate Negatives

After many years of doing enlarged negatives myself via optical-chemical means,  I've partnered with the Chicago Albumen Works to have their expert technicians make these negatives digitally for my clients.  CAW is the only company I would entrust to do this process.

The quality of these negatives surpasses anything one can do in the darkroom.  Negatives are scanned and then output to the required film size.  Digital originals can be output to film, as well as the photographer's own scans.

More information is available here, http://www.albumenworks.com/lvt_notes.htm . One can contact them directly @ 413.274.6901 or via email oleg.baburin[AT]albumenworks.com  .

NOTE: Large format films can be processed to match any of the historical processes listed.  This eliminates the need for an EDN.  Call before shooting for proper E.I. placement to match the print process you want to use.
